Artist's Statement

My work refers to the natural world and our place in it, in both a physical and a spiritual sense. I feel we neglect our spiritual connections to our environment at our peril. In "Swamp Thing" I had the wish to make a whole cloth quilt. Here the background was painted with textile paints and printed over with a linocut and a collagraph using screen printing inks. I used the two plates as units to create a scene. This piece was then felted and stitched before being applied to a silk organza backing. The whole piece was then overdyed. In this piece I feel the quiet reassurance of the jungle, the edge of the tropics, the lurking wait of the crocodile, beautiful, deadly and unseen.
