Honeyjar

Artist's Statement

Honeyjar continues my exploration of an inner recalled landscape. It refers to the label on the honey we had as children, in which a bear held a honeyjar showing a label with a bear holding a honeyjar, ad infinitum. As an unwilling immigrant child, this label gave me the opportunity to teleport myself out of the strange new world in which I found myself, into a friendlier imaginary one. As an adult, it seems to me that in the landscape we see this same friendly infinity and in its presence we become aware of our correct place in the universe.

As part of the "Across Australia" exhibition curated by Dijanne Ceeval, this piece was shown in the Netherlands and several Middle Eastern cities as well as many in Australia. The exhibition was the most marvellous ambassador for Australia and for the communicative skills of textiles, in many countries in which we Westerners really do not understand the language, nuance and customs.
