The Quilted Landscape

Artist's Statement

Digitally-manipulated images of a watercolour painting, printed with silk dyes onto silk and layered over a sample of real watercolour painting. The pieces vary and may also include some machine stitching and/or overprinting. Each sample comes in a CD case together with a CD featuring digital files of all the samples and a solution for "Integration and Creation".

My work explores the concept of sampling, of the virtual and real. I have taken the medium of musical sampling - the digital file on CD - to present all my virtual visual samples, whilst using the CD case itself as the frame for my real visual samples. These are presented in a CD rack as though the viewer is in a shop. They are encouraged to pick and choose from the samples, slide them onto the shelves overlaying the poster, and so create a quilted landscape of their own. The same landscape is sampled in a more conventional textile manner as a triptych of felted pieces. The use of plastic over textiles, with which I am currently besotted, serves as a unifying element between all of the pieces.

Perspex frame for the watercolour painting, with positional "shelves" for displaying a selection of the samples.
